Helen Barrett
Helen Barrett passed away on July 5, 2006. She
was 88 years old and up until a few months before her passing, lived in her
home, near Edson Alberta. Helen led a full and varied life, most of it related
to activities in the outdoors. Helen and Bob moved to UC with their daughter
Kathy (age 9) in 1952. Bob worked as a carpenter foreman in many of the
surrounding mines. Helen was known for her dog team, which she used to haul
freight to mines around the lakes during the spring and fall break-up and
freeze-up. She loved hunting and fishing and often spoke of the many adventures
they had with Hap and Slim Cave during the fall goose hunt across Lake Athabasca.
She was a true woman of the north and even during her last days in hospital, she
spoke enthusiastically of all the projects she was going to take on "when she
got feeling better". She passed away with Kathy and her family with her. Bob
predeceased Helen in 1973. I will miss her.
