The emergence of the "Friends of Uranium City" is a direct result of the efforts of a small group and it is our intention to recognize their efforts. We realize that we are not familiar with the names of all those that contributed, however we trust they will forgive our not naming them and join us in our thanks to the ones that started it all.
As we understand it Dave Smith, Gerry Dufort and Audrey (Seckinger) Tippe began arranging a gathering of former residents in Calgary in 1986. About 100 attended in a rented hotel suite. The same group planned and put together a gathering in1989. This reunion at Edmonton was attended by about 200.
Encouraged and excited, plans for a third reunion began. New recruits including Grace (Kilbreath) Hart and Paulette (Perron) Folden joined with Gerry and Dave to put together the Symons Valley Ranch reunion in 1991.
The 1993 Uranium City reunion was held at Silver Star Mountain, Vernon, BC. Gerry Dufort and Grace (Kilbreath) Hart were the main organizers. Len and Joyce Kilbreath began their involvement as organizers. The 1993 reunion was attended by about 400.
In 1998 the reunion was held at Cypress Hills, SK. It is considered to be an ideal location due to its resort facilities and large camping area. Almost 700 attended. Assisting Len and Joyce were Lorne Johnson and Lorraine (Parent) Vellacott. The 1998 reunion saw the playing of the first Friends of Uranium City golf tournament organized by Mike Bicklmeier.
2001 saw the return to Cypress Hills Interprovincal Park of over 400 "Friends of Uranium City".
We are happy to report we are returning to the park for the 2005 reunion which coincides with the Saskatchewan Centennial.
